Eyes of Winter

The wind was blowing a gale when I pulled up to the prairie dog town west of Benjamin on that blustery winter day. I could see a few “dogs” peering from the protection of their burrows but the burning yellow eyes only a short distance away is what peeked my interest. Crawling through the wind driven snow I pushed the heavy 500mm lens before me and finally approached within a optimum range for photos. Despite the burrowing owl sinking deeper behind the snow drift as I shot image after image, I knew that I had procured the photo that I wanted. It was a defining image for my 30 plus years of documenting the wildlife of the Texas plains.
Canon F1N, AE motordrive and Canon 500mm F4.5L lens. Kodachrome 64 film.
