My good friend and pilot, Knut Mjolhus, were camped in Fresno Canyon for a photo shoot of Santa Elena Canyon from the air. Although we had planned the flight for the following day I made mention that we ought to go up for a look and get everything located if nothing but for expediency for the next day shoot. As we neared the canyon we noticed that a storm was breaking in the west and light was beginning to filter through the cloud break. Soon the richest light imaginable shown upon the yawning chasm below and I grabbed the cameras to shoot. It was a memorable occasion. Hasselblad 501 CM with Planar 80mm lens. Velvia 50 ISO film and the aircraft was a Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter.

WoW what wonderful images…I especially enjoyed the West TX show! A friend emailed me & I am so glad to be introduced to such talent! The pic of Santa Elena Canyon from the air is spectacular! I never imagined it to be as dramatic from the top as it is from the the bottom! Thanks!!!
I had the opportunity to raft through the Santa ELena Canyon with the Texas Tech Outing Club back in 1973. I had my Nikkormat with me and was able to capture some interesting shots. Unfortunately through the years the photos have hidden themselves from me.
It appears the view from the top is as dramatic as being in the Canyon.
